Seaport Academy

Seaport Academy is the newest licensed school developed by Schools for Children, Inc. A private school serving publicly funded students eligible for special education, this small school provides students with a unique setting. It is housed in the Charlestown Navy Yard at the Boston Harbor waterfront.

Following a merger with another not-for-profit corporation (the New England Historic Seaport) in 1997, a creative maritime education program came into being. Staff and administrators worked to excite student learning by placing the adolescents in unique arenas. Boating led to water testing activities; fishing spawned studies of ecology and biology; sailing introduced lessons in geometry.

The curriculum, based on the Massachusetts Frameworks, is taught using the resources of the waterfront. In five years, the Seaport Academy has grown from an enrollment of 8 youngsters to today's enrollment of 22. Believing in the power of close involvement between staff and student, this small school demonstrates just how this can work to help students achieve success.
