Summer Program

The Dearborn Academy Summer Program serves children and adolescents ages 5-16 with emotional, behavioral and learning difficulties. The program is designed to afford students an enriching and exciting summer experience and to prevent regression of skills they have learned during the academic year.

The Dearborn Academy Summer Program is designed to create a welcoming and caring environment where students feel safe and accepted, and in which they can address their social, emotional and behavioral issues while learning at the same time. All students participating in the Summer Program share common issues. They need to improve their self-esteem, work on effective decision making skills, develop positive and trusting relationships and learn appropriate behaviors. The program is designed to hold students responsible for their behaviors, and to teach them appropriate behaviors and skills.

  Program Components

The Summer Program provides a highly structured, therapeutic environment. Students are taught by teams composed of a teacher, counselor, and teaching assistant.

The program offers a variety of experiences that aim toward improving the academic and decision-making skills and self-esteem of students. On a typical day, students have a period dedicated to solidifying academic skills learned during the school year, a counseling group aimed at specific social skills and issues, and an activity period.

Students have access to swimming and arts and crafts. An on-site jobs program and Adventure Based Counseling designed to expand students' self-esteem and self awareness, are available to students. Weekly field trips to local points of interest are provided for all students.

A program-wide behavior management support program helps maintain clear and consistent expectations for students, fosters cooperative, pro-social behaviors, and provides opportunities for positive reinforcers.

Students are served breakfast and lunch. Families may qualify for the Federal Nutrition Program, and be eligible for Free or Reduced Meals.
