Seaport Campus was established in 1995 as the educational arm of the New England Historic Seaport (NEHS), a not-for-profit organization offering young people opportunities for self-development through experiences at sea. NEHS itself merged with Schools for Children, Inc. in 1997.
Throughout these organizational changes, the Seaport Campus has continued to provide an alternative special education high school program with special emphasis on activity-based learning that is built around a maritime base. The 198 day school year features extensive opportunities for hands-on learning. Our innovative and highly individualized program is designed with the ultimate goal of transitioning students, aged 14-17, back to the public school setting -- or to other less restrictive settings -- when appropriate.
The campus is situated in the middle of the Charlestown Navy Yard, which is both rich in history an alive with present day operations. This setting makes learning stimulating and relevant. From a classroom window, students have a direct view of the Boston harbor and city skyline. It is a short walk to the USS Constitution.
Collaboration with the Boston National Historic park, Armed Services YMCA, and with other youth programs such as the Courageous Sailing Center add breadth to our program offerings.
